Somewhere nearby, amidst the dark forests and tangled fens, are the Caves of Chaos where fell creatures lie in wait. Here, at one of civilization’s strongholds between Lawful lands and Chaos, you will base yourselves and equip for forays against the wicked monsters who lurk in the wilds. Now you must fend for yourselves your fate is in your hands, for better or worse.Īhead, up the winding road, atop a sheer-wailed mount of stone, looms the great Keep. There is much to learn, and you are willing and eager to be about it! Each of you has come with everything which could possibly be given you to help. You have it in you to become great, but you must gain experience and knowledge and greater skill. Of course you are inexperienced, but you have your skills and a heart that cries out for adventure. You are indeed members of that exceptional class, adventurers who have journeyed to the Keep on the Borderlands in search of fame and fortune. True, some few who do survive the process will turn from Law and good and serve the masters of Chaos, but most will remain faithful and ready to fight Chaos wherever it threatens to infect the Realm. They will be tried in the fire of combat, those who return, hardened and more fit. Here, these individuals will become skilled in their profession, be it fighter or magic-user, cleric or thief. Such adventurers meet the forces of Chaos in a testing ground where only the fittest will return to relate the tale. It is these adventurers who, provided they survive the challenge, carry the battle to the enemy. Bold adventurers from the Realm set off for the Borderlands to seek their fortune. Yet, there are always certain exceptional and brave members of humanity, as well as similar individuals among its allies - dwarves, elves, and halflings - who rise above the common level and join battle to stave off the darkness which would otherwise overwhelm the land. If it were not for a stout few, many in the Realm would indeed fall prey to the evil which surrounds them. Always the forces of Chaos press upon its borders, seeking to enslave its populace, rape its riches, and steal its treasures. The Realm of mankind is narrow and constricted. I am looking for between 6 and 8 players. If your character dies you can roll up another one. Its old school Classic D&D and a game where outcomes are controlled by dice and players choices. Don’t post for a week or so and your character will die horribly. Players that don’t post don’t get to take actions. Some NPCs are higher level but it will be pretty close to the end of this game by the time PCs reach it.ĭM posts will come on Tuesday and Friday evenings. That means some stuff is going to be made up on the fly, and it may be a little different the next time we do it. I have created some documents that will provide you with everything you need to make characters and play. As the characters grow in power they will be drawn into the webs of intrigue.įor this game I have decided to move away from B/X in favor of the OD&D clone Swords & Wizardry. The Keep has drawn the attention of all three alignments, each side plans to use the area for its own purpose.

Players who want to interact with the NPCs and uncover mysteries. Players who ask questions about what is going on. There will be dungeon crawling! But I am really looking for players that examine what they have done and pay attention to what is happening around them. We can find out how the religions work together. I have left a good deal of details blank to give characters room to grow.

There is not a lot of depth on the Realms of Man beyond the Keep because the module should contain enough seed for several years of Play by Post excitement and everything important to the growing characters will happen there.Īlso taking a cue from the author, religions are based on alignments not gods. I have stuck with Gygax's original description of the world beyond the Borderlands rather than come up with a world or place it in a pre-made setting. Chaos as outlined by Gygax in the module's introduction. My version will play heavily on the battle of Law vs. The module was written in a simpler time when there were three alignments and they were more about what side you were on than dictating character's behavior. So don't be scared off by having played it. My take on B2 uses most of the original but will have enough twists to trip up even the most seasoned of players. I have run this module several times and really never get enough of it. Gygax wrote the module in a very generic style intending for the DM to build on its skeletal framework. This is probably the most played Classic D&D module of all time.
